I'm about halfway through Baldoni's Great Communication Secrets of Great Leaders and I had to see if anyone else felt the way I do about his writing. He hasn't got anything to say and he's taking all day to prove it. What a waste of paper.

I sold all of my management/leadership books. The information is just common sense, recycled and repackaged with different authors. And a lot of it is vague and pithy. You have to be in the trenches to learn the lessons and apply them. Reading about it doesn't always make the lesson stick.

I see nothing wrong with this HBP article. Most of the management books and articles are SELF PROMOTIONS. Authors give you vast amounts of vague statements and advices spiced up with just a little bit of specific stuff (usually cited from Jack Welch or Yogi Berra) that we get to think "WOW this guy knows his stuff and that is validated by Harvard publishing him".

Of course he is not going to get specific. He and himalikes want us to believe he will bring those specifics with him when we hire him to be our CEO or to give us a speech or consult on our business.

So, this is one big Victoria's Secret ad. Showing just enough to make you feel good (or turn you on) and promise you that you can look as good as Adriana Lima if you buy that bra ...err... hire John Baldoni as a consultant.

Question is, while Adriana Lima would definately deliver the promise, would John Baldoni?

Brilliant, scathing, and entertaining. Everyone is looking for advice and Harvard feels obligated to dole it out...but truth be told it's anyone's guess how our economy will get out of this downturn. The only thing we all know for sure is that it won't be through self help, it will be through hard work and smart decisions.
